The T-Shirt Has a Voice: A USF Upward Bound Project

http://thetshirthasavoice.blogspot.com/

"The T-Shirt Has a Voice is a class that includes both the history and design culture around ‘the t-shirt’ and how it is one of the most popular forms of public art and advertisement that we, as a community, are exposed. The class will learn the technical aspect of software tools, color, and composition skills. In addition, they will also learn about specific moments/figures in history and how those specific events inspired people to create t-shirts as a response to what was going on around them.

The final project will be to collaboratively design two t-shirts that will be sold in the TRUE and FTC clothing boutiques on Haight Street, San Francisco. Students will present t-shirt design concepts to the boutique owners/reps. and will be required to develop a minor marketing strategy around the designs to help sell their products. The goal here is not about profit, but more about experience, process, and research."

Last week our homey Jack Curtin was gracious enough to talk with the kids for a while about being a Pro Skater and being sponsored by different clothing brands. It was a pleasure to have the kids check out the other side of things.

5.9.09: IAN JOHNSON Art Show @ White Walls Opening Reception

FTC_IanJohnsonwwbanner.jpg Thumbnail image for FTC_WE_MilesQuintet.jpg

Known for his love of skateboarding and distinctive illustrations of iconic jazz musicians, Ian Johnson is regarded as San Francisco's "City Treasure" if you will. He elevated the aesthetics of the urban art game by staying true to his 2 passions - Skateboarding & Jazz. While most wouldn't consider this fusion possible or even marketable, the demand for his art proves otherwise. His decks are consistently sold out even before they hit the shelves. We're lucky if we can hold on to a t-shirt or even a postcard from his Western Edition line.

Ian was recently featured in the 2009 Grammy Art Gallery, curated by Will I Am, for his portrait of Al green which has lead to an overwhelming demand for his most recent deck series featuring the Miles Quintet.

We are incredibly proud to call Ian Johnson family and excited for his upcoming show at White Walls gallery. Join us as we celebrate the success of Western Edition and it's revered composer, Ian Johnson.

FTC presents TD Camp "Face to FACE"

Release Date: April 21st 2009

Face to Face is a collage of exclusive songs arranged and produced by veteran Bay Area Producer/DJ, TD Camp.

It features many of Northern California's best rappers including Zion I, San Quinn, Mac Dre, Andre Nickatina, Casual (Hiero), Pep Love (Hiero), and Bored Stiff, to rising stars like Otayo Dubb, Spank Pops, Z-Man and more. The album's title track features an impressive song by the one and only Snoop Dogg, while other songs include cuts by Q-Bert, vocals from Sony recording artist Goapele, and Bay Area legend Michael Marshall.

As the title suggests, Face to Face brings together artists, and bridges the gap between Hip Hop, and Street Rap, with a refreshing collection of concepts and subject matter.

The beats that TD Camp lays down, show his true commitment to style and quality. As a long time club, radio, and mix DJ, TD knows what his audience likes, and puts together a timeless blend of smooth sounds and chopped beats that are guaranteed to have ears open and heads nodding all over the globe.

The album is sponsored by FTC, and released by Bay Area Hip-Hop label, Hella Records. Both companies are international in their fields as pioneers and taste makers. This means that Face to Face will be uniquely promoted through the skateboard and music industries, by two of the Bay Area's finest.

FTC, based in San Francisco, is a lifestyle brand with deep roots in authentic street culture including skate/snowboarding, art, music and entertainment. With almost a quarter century of leading the underground in SF and abroad, FTC is internationally recognized as one of the forefather's of modern street skating and street culture. FTC brand produces a full clothing line in addition to video dvds, music cds, books, & music-sports-art events.

Proceeds from sales will go to benefit Upward Sound's Youth Music Program.
